06 Apr Boat ramps closed at Lake Moondarra
Mount Isa Water Board reminds the community that, in response to the Direction of the Chief Health Officer, there are partial closures in place at Lake Moondarra including closure of the boat ramps as has occurred at all other Queensland Government controlled dams. Marine Safety Queensland has published guidance for the public here.
“There has been some confusion in regards to recreational boating, so we are trying to keeping this simple because the intent of Government decisions is clearly that everyone should stay home” MIWB Chief Executive Stephen Farrelly said “no member of the public needs to put a boat on Lake Moondarra for work purposes, no one has a boat on the Lake as their place of residence, there is no essential purpose for a member of the public to use a motorcraft on Lake Moondarra”.
Closures can be lawfully enforceable, however MIWB’s practice has been to appeal to the community for cooperation in matters like these and that remains the preference.
“We all understand the disappointment of having our recreation activities and freedom of movement curtailed” Mr Farrelly said “however we also understand how important it is to follow the advice and directions of the Chief Health Officer and contain the spread of this virus”.
Access to the Lake and the Reserve surrounding it remains open to the public for the essential purpose of exercise, including the use of canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards.
MIWB continues to remind the community that while access to the Lake remains open, the situation continues to be monitored to ensure COVID 19 measures were being respected. If you are out, you can only be with no more than one other person; or with family who ordinarily live in the same household as you. MIWB will continue to monitor compliance on the land within their responsibility.
Mount Isa Water Board is the Trustee for the 11,000 hectare R48 Reserve for Water and Recreation purposes, the land surrounding Lake Moondarra.
