Bow Hunters Club
The Mount Isa District Bowhunters (MIDB) holds fortnightly events every second Sunday morning and most Friday nights, at the Bowhunters Clubhouse off Lake Moondarra Drive. Astronomy
Astronomy Group of Mount Isa
Brief History In the early 1990’s the CSIRO Double Helix Club established a branch in Mount Isa, holding a public astronomy night as their first large scale event. Excellent public response to this night motivated the formation of an astronomy club. The club’s goals are to support members and provide observing opportunities for the public, interested groups and individuals. Ultimately the Astronomy Group of Mount Isa was incorporated and an observatory was established at the Lions Youth Camp (LYC), Lake Moondarra. Since then our membership has gradualy declined to around a half dozen. The observatory is a roll off roof design housing two telescopes. There also is a small telescope for observing the sun in white light . Main activities are:
- scheduled observing nights: held monthly near new moon (members of the public are welcome to attend)
- public observing: usually held to coincide with a particular phenomenon such as the transit of Venus in 2012.
- special observing: arranged with groups such as schools and local associations for a private observing session.
The location of the observatory aims to avoid the worsening light pollution of Mount Isa. Ph: 0437 748 163.
Bird Watchers
Lake Moondarra and the R48 Reserve are popular destinations for local bird watchers due to the large array of bird species living off and around the water’s edge.
Boating
Lake Moondarra is a popular recreational spot for motor boating in the city. There are four boat ramps at various locations around the lake’s edge.
Canoeing
North West Canoe Club
Canoe on Lake Moondarra The North West Canoe Club’s (NWCC) clubhouse is at Transport Bay at Lake Moondarra, 18km from the centre of Mount Isa. With about 60 members,it is said to be one of the most successful canoe clubs in Australia. NWCC competitors regularly compete in state and national championships. Boat storage is available to members at the clubhouse; and a few club boats (including K1’s, TK1’s and Canadians) are available for loan to visitors. The clubhouse also houses about 12 “polo bats”. These small, stable and very manoeuvrable canoes (originally used for canoe polo) are mostly used by children or anybody else looking for fun on the water. Fishing
Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group
Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group (MIFSG) is a community benefit organisation that supports fish breeding and fish restocking in the lakes and dams surrounding Mount Isa in order to improve recreational fishing in the region. As a not-for-profit organisation, MIFSG relies on government grants and funding by local businesses to conduct fish breeding and restocking activities at Lake Moondarra, Lake Julius, Lake Corella and East Leichhardt Dam. MIFSG has been restocking fish in these lakes and dams since 1987, all fish stocking activity is carried out under the guidelines of the Queensland Department of Primary Industries (DPI). Only fish species belonging to the Gulf catchment can be used in the fish stocking program. This currently includes Barramundi and Sooty Grunter. The MIFSG meets on the third Wednesday of each month. Isa Rats
Isa Rats are Mount Isa’s only triathalon group. Monthly events are held at the R48 Reserve. The club has about 60 members including children and adults of all ages. Tel: (07) 4743 3917
Waterskiing
Mount Isa Water Ski Club
The Isa Ski & Power Boat Club Inc is the only water-ski club in Mount Isa. The Club bases its activities at nearby Lake Moondara, approximately 15 kilometres north of Mount Isa. The Club has several facilities including a tin roof/cement floor open clubhouse, 2 gazeboes, 2 solar powered lights, boat ramp, plenty of lawn area, shady trees with close by parking and public toilet. The clubhouse faces north with our slalom course directly in front of our covered area. Also located on the outside edge of the clubhouse is an open wood fire BBQ with a nearby sink. Most weekends, members gather at sunset to socialise and have a BBQ together, particularly on the school holidays. Several club members hold Level 1 Coaching certificates and have the required skills to teach many different Skiing techniques including Wakeboarding, Slalom and Bare footing to name a few. Come and try days are a successful fun activity where members commit the day to sharing their equipment and techniques. Although water-skiing, wake boarding, bare footing, hydrofoil skiing is the primary reason for our club, we still welcome people who have never water-skied. The club area is a lovely place to have a picnic and socialise with a friendly group of people (anyone could be a potential member). We enjoy an amazing sunset most nights with the beautiful outback flora and fauna around us on vibrant hilly red soil, rain hail or shine. Mountain Biking
Stack City Mountain Bike Club
Stack City MTB is Mount Isa’s growing Mountain Bike Club with over 40km of trails a short drive out of town attracting a growing number of local and travelling mountain bikers. Started and maintained by dedicated volunteers, the club holds regular challenges and events including the upcoming Mount Isa Classic to attract new members and raise awareness of the tracks. The club encourages participants of all ages and abilities and will be happy to take new members out for their first experience on their frequent social rides.
